in an effort to be more thrifty, i’ve been making all the sweet snacks around the house from scratch. lately, i haven’t been making as much as usual since we’re all getting fat. but the holiday’s are coming, and this year we’re going over to MILs for the Thanksgiving festivities. i don’t mind one bit- i hate cooking Thanksgiving dinner. i did, however, want to contribute somehow, so i’ve decided to bring dessert. perfect for me, since i love cooking dessert.
i wanted to do something a little different than the usual apple, pumpkin, or cherry pie, so i began scouring the intarwebs for something tasty, festive, and sweet. and not too difficult.
somehow, i ended up with baked apples. i have e-mailed myself several recipes to try, but i only have the ingredients on hand for one of them. i tried it tonight.
first, i would like to say that- all apples are NOT created equal. i know some people who go to the grocery store, grab a bag of apples, and call it a good trip. but that’s just not the way i function. i LOVE apples, but i don’t like granny smith apples. i don’t like red delicious, or golden delicious, and pink lady apples are too sweet for me. my favorite apples are Washington Gala apples. they have the perfect balance of tart sweetness that makes them delicious baked, fried, or eaten raw. but that’s just my opinion, and everybody’s tastebuds differ. the only way to figure out which one you like best, it to try them all.
anyways.
i used this recipe HERE for tonights experiment.
i used Gala apples, with raisins (not currants) and 1/4 cup of dried cranberries instead of pecans, because we just don’t care for nuts on our desserts in this house.
OMG. i swear, i’m in heaven that thing was SO good.
only problem? my son thought it looked gross. and when i finally got him to try some, he said it was okay… but apparently the raisins are gross. WHATEVER. i swear, the boy has no taste. so this means i’m going to have to find another recipe for Thanksgiving dessert.
luckily, i have a back up baked apple dessert recipe.
check it out HERE.
hopefully K will like it better than the cranberries and raisins. maybe i’ll even buy the vanilla icecream to go with it, since i’m going to have to get the ingredients anyways.
WDYT?
