Huh?

i love the things kids say. they view the world through eyes that are completely free from preconcieved notions or prejudices. see if you can guess what this is….

tree peels
go on. guess. it’s not that hard to figure out, but it’s cute. you see, we have a pile of wood for our wood stove right outside the front door, and as we were all walking in the door after coming home from school my son looked at the pile of bark we use to start the fires and declared “tree peels!”…they’re still in the circular tree branch shape, and indeed look like tree peels. :)
how about a cock? no, not a rooster or a slang term for male anatomy… it’s what my son used to call socks. just imagine the fun we had while grocery shopping and having my little boy loudly proclaim “mama! my cock fell off! my cock fell off!” yeah. we fixed that little mispronounciation as soon as we could.
maybe you can guess what poot is? it’s not a slang term either… it’s what he used to call “soup”. i kinda miss those cute little innocent mistakes. if anything, they made life interesting. it’ll be a few months yet, but i can’t wait to start reporting E’s new words to you. or heck, words in general, since she hasn’t said her first one yet….

My Little Banshee

my daughter has discovered a new talent. yay! she lays on her tummy, smiles real big, and screams like a banshee. yesterday for thirty minutes straight my livingroom sounded like a cheap horror film. how do you tell a baby to stop screaming like that? if my son started doing that, after a stern warning, i’d pop him on the rear and send him off to bed until he could get ahold of himself… but a baby? i admit, it was kinda cute. she looked so proud of herself for finding that new talent. yes, the bubbles and monkey face is much cuter (and less piercing to the ear drums) but it’s fun to watch a little person discover all the neat little things they’re capable of. it wasn’t so cute when she started doing it at 9:00 at night after K had gone to bed, and i was trying to get her to sleep. i’m pretty sure i’d die without her paci’s.

i was one of those mom’s who, when pregnant with my first, said “i will NEVER give my child a pacifier”. there’s nothing worse than seeing a 4 year old with a pacifier in their mouth, or a child talking to their parents around a binky. of course, there are some things that people who haven’t had kids yet just don’t understand. i didn’t buy any pacifiers for my son when he was born, but i lasted about 2 days after going home before i was boiling up the pacifiers i had gotten at my baby shower. low and behold, my son doesn’t have buck teeth, and he didn’t keep his paci past a year and a half old. (it wasn’t too difficult to wean him off it)
with my daughter, i didn’t even try to resist. they offered to give her a paci in the hospital and i accepted graciously. my son probably could have gone without a paci, and not been too much of a handful, but my daughter was born with a very strong sucking reflex. i had a few latch problems with my son, but my daughter latched on to my breast with no problems from the first moment i held her there. unfortunately, she wanted to be there ALL THE TIME. so when they offered to give her a paci while letting me sleep a little bit i couldn’t turn down the offer.
now, once again, i find myself eternally grateful for a pacifier. it quiets the banshee, and helps get her to sleep. it saves my body from becoming a living pacifier and babies are just plain cute with a paci.
i don’t think i’ll have a problem weaning her off it…most of the time during the day she pops it out of her mouth, and chews on the back side of it. sometimes she pops the bottom half in so it’s rubbing her bottom gums. i have a feeling she’s having a hard time with teething. at her 6 month check up (4 weeks ago) the doc said her left bottom tooth may be popping through soon…did i mention that was 4 weeks ago? ugh.
okay. i’ve gone from screaming to teething in less than a few minutes and i have a feeling i should stop blogging until my morning caffeine fix has has had time to perk me up. i’m wandering a little bit more than usual, which is to say, A LOT.
must…stop…typing…
